Bucks mission brief

The day opens on the green, barefoot and building fast: a quick tutorial gets the whole side playing hard, and by the second end the scoreboard's a mess of grudges nobody's letting go. From there it's straight into a Bavarian beerhall, seats held, steins and bretzels landing together, the Buck fighting a full litre like it owes him money. Next, the home ground: table reserved, the game running on every screen, a steak cooked exactly his way, and a bonus pint that says thanks for playing. Last stop, a cordoned VIP booth for the final two hours, his own beer bucket waiting, the group walked straight in like the home side. Four venues, one line-up, no substitutions needed.

Pitch To Pub kicks off on the green and doesn't come off the park until the small hours. Four venues, one running scoreline, and the Buck copping every point of it.

There's no huddle beforehand working out where everyone's meant to be. The line-up's set, the ground's booked, and the only decision left is who's opening.

First whistle's barefoot, on our own bowls green. One cold beer lands as the group walks on, then a quick run-through gets everyone match-fit before the real contest starts. Two ends in and it's stopped being friendly: near misses get appealed like LBWs, rivalries form on the spot, and the Buck's copping sledges from every position on the green.

Full-time on the bowls and it's straight to the clubrooms, Bavarian-style: a beerhall with the seats already held for you. Steins land heavy, bretzels get passed round like a shared plate at half-time, and the Buck's handed a full litre that turns out to be a two-handed effort. He's still finding his grip on it when the second round arrives.

From there it's home turf: the sports bar, your table reserved and the big screen running the match like it was scheduled around you. A steak arrives cooked exactly the way each bloke calls it, chips on the side, and the Buck's poured a bonus pint on the house, presumably compensation for how badly this season's about to go for him personally.

Final quarter is the VIP booth, cordoned off and yours alone for two hours: no one else's game bleeding into your result. The Buck's beer bucket is waiting before he sits down, and if the lads want to keep shouting rounds from there, the bar's ready to keep the scoreboard climbing.

Every ground on the circuit, the group walks straight through the gate like the home side, boots already meant to be there.

By full-time the Buck's been fed, watered and heckled from a bowls green to a beerhall to a sports bar to a private box, and the lads have got enough dirt on him to run for the rest of the season.

There's one Pitch To Pub on the board per date, and the good Saturdays go early. Lock yours in now, because nobody wants to be the mate explaining why the squad's stuck playing away this year.
