Melbourne’s multiculturalism is glorious, from incredible food, to fashion, to the zest and life it injects into the city’s walls themselves. Whether you’re looking for imported beers and whiskeys, to the best Indian food or Greek souvlaki you’ve had in your life, the melting pot of Melbourne is lined by its international people.
Food
You can’t go to Melbourne without coming back ranting and raving about how incredible the food is. High quality and a fusion between differing cultures, some totally unexpected, you can get everything from caviar and immaculate sashimi, to a dirty kebab or the famous HSP, which are each absolute lifesavers after a night out. You can dine at the Crown casino on prime steak, or any number of rustic and bougie restaurants along the south bank, or you can head into Chinatown for the best dumplings you’ve ever had in your life. But why stop at the high quality food, let’s throw in the bevs as well. Melbourne is famous for its coffee culture, with essentially any type, blend, or preparation method available to you within a few streets, and probably through a little hole in the wall. But if you’ve got a more discerning buck then the fun doesn’t just stop at coffee. With a proud history of brewing, Melbourne has all manner of iconic brews for any buck, from Carlton Draft to Victoria Bitter (for those that like drinking straight Vegemite). With plenty of hidden bars, from gin to whiskey, down unobtrusive and easily missed alleys, Melbourne offers a tasting experience for any and every buck that enjoys a good fermented drink.
Location
Not only is all of Melbourne itself easily accessible, from trains to trams, but so are its surroundings. With the stunning Yarra Valley to the East, as well as Mount Hotham, you’ll get the best of stunning scenic hills and perfect snow all within a few hours drive from the CBD. The Yarra Valley, famous for it’s rolling vineyard-covered hills, offers dozens of wineries, many of which have fantastic cellar doors and art galleries attached to them, not to mention many awards to their kitchens. A few hours above, Mt Hotham allows for plenty of skiing (or snow boarding if you’re talentless), with mountainous views and great restaurants that’ll make you feel the Canadian experience. To the West, you have the Otways National Park, with its towering beech trees and ocean views, as well as Torquay, with its incredible and consistent surf for the board enthusiasts. Further West, you’ve got the famous Great Ocean Road and the stunning 12 Apostles, a must see before the remaining monoliths fall into the ocean, and of course Port Fairy, famous for its folk and indie music festivals.
You’d be nuttier than a squirrel poo to write off Melbourne for your buck’s night, it’s an incredible experience that you’ll be kicking yourself for missing. From the food to the culture to the location, this great city of the south will give you a time to remember.
